Fracture Care Q&A

What is fracture care?

Fracture care provides immediate, same-day treatment for broken bones.

Most fractures occur because of injuries, such as car accidents or slip-and-falls. However, certain diseases, like osteoporosis, increase your risk of fractures because they weaken your bones.

If you break a bone at work or during exercise, stop whatever you’re doing and contact Prestige Medical Care. Prompt intervention can prevent the injury from worsening and encourage your body’s healing process.

Who can benefit from fracture care?

Request fracture care at Prestige Medical Care if you suffer a traumatic injury and have any of the following symptoms:

  • Tenderness
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Difficulty moving the affected body part (e.g., a joint or limb)
  • Bruising, redness, or discoloration

Depending on the severity of the injury, there might be a visible bump or welt.

What happens during a fracture care appointment?

Your Prestige Medical Care provider asks about your injury, including when it occurred and the symptoms you’re experiencing. They examine the affected part of your body, checking your skin for bruising and swelling, and testing your reflexes and mobility.

Next, your provider orders diagnostic imaging, such as X-rays, CT scans, or an MRI. These procedures take cross-sectional photos of your bones and joints, allowing your provider to determine the severity of the fracture and make personalized treatment recommendations.

What does fracture care involve?

Prestige Medical Care offers several types of fracture care. They might recommend:

Immobilization

If you have a minor fracture, your provider recommends immobilization with a cast or splint. Immobilization holds your bone in a specific position for 3-5 weeks (or until the break completely heals).

Closed reduction

Severe fractures often affect the alignment of the bones.

If your bones are displaced (misaligned), your Prestige Medical Care provider manually aligns them. They administer a local anesthetic and sedative beforehand to ensure treatment is comfortable and pain-free.

Fracture surgery

Not all fractures heal on their own. Surgery may be necessary if you have a severe fracture or multiple broken bones.

Orthopedic surgery for fractures uses implantable screws, pins, and rods to hold your bones in the proper position while they heal.
